Indian Air Power

Fixed-Wing | Rotary-Wing Aircraft

Modernization is central to the Indian Air Force today with acquisition of such systems as the French Dassault Rafale multirole fighter to field alongside its fleet of Sukhoi Su-30MKI types. A concerted effort is being made to reduce reliance on foreign purchases however, giving rise to projects like the HAL Tejas lightweight multirole fighter. The fleet continues use of aging Cold War-era types including the MiG-21, M2000, and Jaguar which lack the broader mission scope of modern multirole mounts. Nevertheless, all three air services of the Indian military offer key solutions to battlefield questions - the rotorcraft, training, and special-mission fleet all deserve notice. The Indian Air Force alone ranks as a Top 10 power ahead of regional rival China and behind U.S.M.C. aviation according to WDMMA.org.
