Warpower:India

The WARPOWER series of sites take a unique, 'by-the-numbers', quick-reference approach to the current (2023) military capabilities of India. India is consistently ranked as a TOP 5 global military power and, with its evergrowing population, will soon overtake China as most populous. China and Pakistan remain the greatest military threats to India, forcing the country to make great strides in modernizing its current force while also enhancing a local military-industrial base to further reduce reliance on the West and Russia.

Service Branches

The fighting forces of India are collectively managed under the Indian Armed Forces banner and encompasses three major branches of service: the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Indian Army (IA), and the Indian Navy (IN).

Modernization is central to the Indian Air Force today with acquisition of such systems as the French Dassault Rafale multirole fighter to field alongside its fleet of Sukhoi Su-30MKI types. A concerted effort is being made to reduce reliance on foreign purchases however, giving rise to projects like the HAL Tejas lightweight multirole fighter. The fleet continues use of aging Cold War-era types including the MiG-21, M2000, and Jaguar which lack the broader mission scope of modern multirole mounts. Nevertheless, all three air services of the Indian military offer key solutions to battlefield questions - the rotorcraft, training, and special-mission fleet all deserve notice. The Indian Air Force alone ranks as a Top 10 power ahead of regional rival China and behind U.S.M.C. aviation according to WDMMA.org.
NOTES: As many as 73 Tejas Mk.1A single-seaters remain on order for the IAF. The aging fleet of MiG-21 is set to be succeeded by the Tejas Mk.1/1A models in time. Fifty-six Airbus C0295MW tactical transports are on order to the IAF. Six AH-64E attack helos are on order from America for the Indian Army. The indigenous HAL Prachand attack helo continues development ahead of serial production. The Indian Navy still showcases the MiG-29K as its premiere carrierborne air superiority fighter. Nineteen SH-60 Seahawks are on order for the service. The local Dhruv and Chetak helos are also on order.

As can be expected, a massive ground force like the Indian Army is a well-balanced component. The spearhead remains the Main Battle Tank of which several evolutions of Soviet-Russian tanks are seen alongside indigenous models. The infantry fighting force is built around mobility and survival in contested urban environments. The service also fields a considerable number of Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRSs) alongside self-propelled and traditional artillery solutions.
